How to get glitter off your skin, clothes and home
Published
Glitter is the fun part of the night and the hard part of the morning after. Here is how to get glitter spray off your skin, out of your clothes and up from the sofa and the carpet.
The short answer
Glitzify is a temporary shimmer, made to wash away when you are done. Off your skin and out of your hair, rinse it away with shampoo or hand wash. On clothes, shake and lift off the loose glitter first, then wash the garment as its care label says. Around the house, lift it rather than spread it: a lint roller, tape or a vacuum before any wet cloth.
How to get glitter spray off your skin
- Wet the area with warm water.
- Lather up hand wash or shampoo and work it over the glitter with your hands or a soft flannel.
- Rinse, and repeat on any spot where you layered a lot of spray.
- For the odd stubborn speck on your face or body, your usual cleanser or make-up remover on a cotton pad, held on the spot for a few seconds and then wiped away, lifts it without scrubbing.
Wipe gently rather than scrubbing hard, and keep glitter and remover away from your eyes.
How to get it out of your hair
Rinse it out with shampoo, washing as you normally would; if you layered a lot, a second shampoo helps. There is more on spraying and washing hair in how to use glitter hair spray, and how to wash it out.
How to get glitter off clothes
- Take the item off and give it a shake outdoors, so the loose glitter falls outside rather than on the floor.
- Go over it with a lint roller, or wrap tape sticky side out around your fingers and dab. Dabbing lifts glitter; rubbing or brushing pushes it into the weave.
- Wash it as the care label says. Turning it inside out, and washing it on its own, keeps loose glitter off the rest of the load.
- Before the next load, wipe the drum and the door seal with a damp cloth.
Spraying clothes on purpose? Lay them flat on an old sheet first; the how-to is in glitter spray for clothes and fabric.
Sofas, car seats and bedding
- Sofas and car seats: a lint roller first, then the upholstery tool on a vacuum. Tape works in seams and corners.
- Bedding and towels: shake them outdoors, then wash as the care labels say, on their own.
- Bags and hats: tap them out over a bin, then use a lint roller on the fabric.
Floors, carpets and tables
- Carpets and rugs: vacuum slowly, going over the area in two directions.
- Hard floors: vacuum or sweep first, then a damp cloth or mop for what is left. A wet cloth first just spreads it around.
- Tables, sinks and dressing tables: a slightly damp cloth or kitchen roll, wiped in one direction and folded over as you go.
Less to clear up next time
- Spray outdoors, or over a towel or an old sheet you can shake out afterwards.
- Hold the can 20-30 cm (8-12 in) away, and start spraying before you pass over your hair or the fabric, so the first burst does not land in one spot.
- Allow about a minute to dry before you sit down, hug anyone or get in the car.
- Start with a light mist and layer only where you want more sparkle: less spray means less to clear up.
For what the glitter itself is, read microplastic-free glitter, and what the glitter ban means.
Safety
- The spray is flammable: use it away from candles, sparklers and open flames.
- Keep it away from your eyes: do not spray towards your face, and close your eyes if you spray near your hairline. If any gets in your eyes, rinse with plenty of clean water, and get medical advice if irritation does not settle.
- Do not use it on broken or irritated skin.
- Spray in a well-ventilated place, and do not breathe in the spray.
- For ages 16 and over.
